An embassy is the official representation of the Netherlands in another country. The Netherlands has approximately 150 embassies, consulates, and representations worldwide. They are usually located in the capital city, where the government is also located. The embassy is headed by an ambassador.
Embassies maintain contact with other governments and international organizations. This allows countries to collaborate on issues such as climate, security, human rights, and development cooperation. Embassies also promote Dutch interests, for example, in combating terrorism or providing refugee shelter.
In addition, embassies offer assistance to Dutch citizens abroad. Anyone who loses their passport, becomes a victim of crime, or needs assistance after a (natural) disaster can contact the embassy.
Embassy staff speak the language, are familiar with the local culture, and understand the country’s operations. This allows them to open doors that remain closed to others. An embassy is therefore a place where diplomacy, cooperation, and service converge – serving the Netherlands and Dutch citizens abroad.
